I'm trying to finish a few big paintings for my solo show in March, but the lure of whipping out a little one keeps disrupting my plans. So far, I have 6 small, 1 medium size, and 1 large marble painting. Plus, my usual floral and still life paintings. I feel like I need BIG paintings, but maybe I should just embrace these little jewels. Then I can calm down, clean my house, get a few framed, and prepare my painting for the demonstration

in Carlsbad next week.

but new news!

My hard work is paying off! The U.S. Mint announced the new Quarter designs for 2012, and one of my designs is among them. I designed the Acadia National Park quarter for the America The Beautiful series of quarters. It will be released in June.

I was also promoted to Master Designer in the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program.

About the quarters; the Mint began a new series of quarters in 2010. They feature a National Park or National Monument from each state. The banks had to sign up to receive the uncirculated quarters, and the big corporate banks are not enthusiastic about that; they feel it caters to collectors. So finding banks that carry them is hit or miss, but they are starting to pop up in pocket change.

My first attempt at gold leafing the background of a painting. I really like the way it looks. I used an imitation gold leaf, just in case I made a mess and/or hated the result. It is surprisingly easy to do, though I think a bit more nerve racking if I were to use real gold leaf.

As this year is gaining speed, I can honestly and gratefully say that last year was a very good one for me. Many of my goals were achieved, and my family and I have good health and a safe, comfortable home.

What I know for sure (to paraphrase Oprah) is that a lot can be achieved with hard work and determination, that life is not fair, and don’t sweat the small stuff.

As an artist, I seldom feel that I have done enough, or been good enough, but I keep striving for those moments when things come together for me. Keeping this blog is like that. I so appreciate those of you who take the time to look at this blog. And, your comments are valued. Thank you and best wishes for a fabulous 2012.

At first I was chagrined that the previous drop painting from a few posts ago got so much attention. Then I was happy to realize that such a tiny thing can bring so much delight to people.

To spread the delight, I want to give away some of these little paintings. I have them in all sorts of sizes, from business card size, book mark size, and up to 3x5”. They are just really fun to paint, and kind of meditative too.

So, to all my wonderful followers and readers, and comment-ers, please send me a self-addressed stamped envelope (.44 in U.S., whatever postage for first class mail is in other countries), and I‘ll send you your very own drop painting. The frenzy of the Holiday art shows are over, at least my attendance at them is done. "Small Works" at Christmas time has become a popular theme with the galleries and the art groups I'm associated with, and I am happy to participate in their exhibitions and events. I even pulled out some of the oil paintings I've been working on the last several months (like the one above), and they were well received. I hope you like it too.

I love the little hydrangea plant by my front door. It is an old plant; one of those whitish ones that look like old lace. After their prime, the huge balls of flowers turn a very pretty light green before they dry up. For my painting, I used blues and purples instead of greys to give the flowers that pretty blue color you often see in hydrangeas.

The white highlights on the trees are actually scratches through the paint to the paper beneath.

I think it looks pretty neat, although I am trying to decide if the whole painting is too dark.

I may try it again, until I get it just right. Painting all those thin little branches is kind of nerve-wracking though.

Louise had a farm she'd inherited from her Grandfather, a green thumb, and an artist's eye, so everything in her sphere was made more interesting with the addition of flowers, interesting farm implements, and handmade curiousities.

My show was hung at The Pencil In The River Gallery in North Tonawanda this Saturday. It was a last minute call to go ahead and have an exhibition or wait until January. Construction and painting is still happening, but we decided it was a good idea to have a Grand Opening & Artists Opening Reception during the Main Street Merchant's Open House the Saturday after Thanksgiving. 3 good excuses for a party!

This painting was not hung in the show. I tend to want to fill up wall space, but it really does look better with a little breathing room between paintings. I'll post some photos of the gallery in a few weeks.

An old one, but the sunshine and that great blue color still makes me smile!

I won a cash award recently, and a promise to myself is to buy a piece of art for myself if I win some money. I am grateful for the recognition, and in keeping with the small award, I bought this small bird sculpture. It is SO cute! It was made by Dug Stein, a local woodcarver artist, out of recycled materials. He made a whole flock of the little hummers, each with it's wings in a different position. I liked this guy because he looked light-hearted.

Happily for all concerned, I finally caught the chipmunk living in the walls of our house. Chipmunks are as cute as can be, and I'm happy to have them around as long as they keep out of my house. My husband says they are just rats with cute outfits. But, he talks for them like Chip and Dale, which makes me laugh. I had a Havaheart trap set for a week, feeding the little guy a daily snack of apple and peanut butter before he trapped himself. I took him to the woods with a little picnic basket I had prepared for him, so he wouldn't go hungry over the long Winter.

I dug out this pen and ink drawing for old times sake.

This painting was accepted into the Fall Member's show of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society. I received word this evening that it may be disqualified because my membership fee is overdue. I paid my membership, but evidently, it didn't get there, or it was overlooked. Is nothing ever easy!!?? I hate to not be in the show because of such a dumb reason.

On the other hand, I went outside this evening after working inside all day, and this is what the sky looked like. It was a beautiful, glorious fall day, and I felt trapped indoors, finishing up some business. How can I feel grumpy about lost mail when the sky looks like this??!! 3 more beautiful days ahead, and I intend to wallow in the sunshine and blissful, fresh fall air.

Cold and rainy, but no frost yet. I'm harvesting the last of the basil and making some pesto to freeze. I find that it tastes best when the garlic is added fresh, after it thaws.

It's like a taste of summer.

Our County Arts Council is looking for donations for their annual fundraiser. This is a new venture called "6x6". Artists donate a 6 x 6" piece of art, and each will be put on the wall anonymously and sold for $25 each during a big opening party/sale. What is not sold that night will be for sale for the following month. Isn't that a great idea?

I am excited about it, because I seldom can afford to buy art, but I am hoping to snag a few pieces at this!

I donated a few tiny paintings that I matted to 6x6"; anything 2 or 3 dimensional that is 6x6" works.

My dear friend Louise lived in the home her Grandfather built in the Gold Country of California. Her house and yard were her passion, and she made it a showplace, featured several times in Country Home and Country Living magazines. She generously let the local Arts Council host art exhibitions at her place, and that is how I got to know her. She bought several paintings from me, and I created many paintings using her house, garden, and vast collections of old and interesting items as inspiration. Thinking about it know, Louise and her garden were a big boost to my career as an artist. Louise passed away a few years ago, at the age of 97, but I am happy to have a variety of paintings inspired by her lovely life. Thanks Louise!

Lucy was married to Rutherford Hayes, and during his term in office, the President and First Lady sponsored the first Easter Egg roll on the White House lawn. The portrait is by Susan Gamble, and the reverse is designed by me and sculpted by Joseph Menna. It is available as a gold coin for $1,104.00, and as a bronze coin for $7.95. Just when I finished a few new paintings, my scanner went on the blink, and the little paintings just don't look good when they are photographed rather than scanned. SO, you will have to wait a few more days to see the new paintings.

This dahlia is an older painting, and one of my favorites. I just love how the yellows and pinks make that luscious coral color. And, with the bright blue background, it makes me smile.

My exhibition comes down this weekend, and I am happy to report it a big success. Thank you to all you blog readers who sent words of encouragement. It is so generous of you to write, and I appreciate every grain of positiveness.

The opening reception went very well last night. I didn't spill any food on myself, forget anyone's name, or trip walking around in my long dress. (Yes, I'm a little uncoordinated.) Oh, and several paintings and prints sold. Much celebrating was had last night, followed by much sleeping in this morning. Can't wait to start some new paintings!

Seems like this has been my main nourishment the last few weeks. The ICE! not the whiskey!

I like hot weather, but when your old farmhouse gets to be 87 degrees, it's hard to get work done. I've made do with fans and ice and a few trips to the creek.

This week, I'll be framing a few new pieces for my exhibition at The Purple Doorknob in Ellicottville. The Opening is this Friday and it runs til August 24. It's an interesting space, and Urania, who owns the shop, is a clever merchandiser, so I'm curious to see what advice she can give me about hanging the paintings in interesting groupings.

My friend Andy is visiting from Ireland, so I was inspired to post this painting. I worked from photos I took on the island of Inis Mor. Beautiful, wonderful sights and people. I'm in love with Ireland, and hope to return for another painting trip before too long.

I was asked to have an exhibition at a local liquor store during a wine tasting. I said yes, without much enthusiasm. I'm afraid of being tacky. Growing up with few social skills has left me perpetually confused of what is appropriate and what is not, socially and sometimes, professionally. Also, my rebellious nature sometimes rears and says WTH!! And sometimes, being an artist, I feel like I must vary from the norm, somewhat.

I'll do it, because I said I would, but don't tell anyone.

This painting caught my eye because it is Red (sort of), White, and Blue. This was painted as a demonstration for my Creative Women's group. I masked off all the branches with masking fluid, then poured paint onto the wet paper. As the paint was drying, I sprinkled salt for the interesting mottled effect. Then, I peeled off the mask, and painted the bird and branches.

This is the finished painting from my workshop last Saturday. We got a good start on it at the workshop, but I must admit, I worked on it for a few more hours once I got home. I really tried to simplify it (see the photo below), but sometimes, that is a hard thing to do.

I'm excited about my painting workshop tomorrow. I'm practicing on the piece we will be painting, just in case there are any surprises. (there always are!) I really want the students to be able to take their painting home finished, or close to finished.

Meanwhile, I'm here still struggling with oils.... They are getting better, and I do like the alla prima technique best, probably because it is fastest! Can't quite get used to the fact that the paint stays wet for a long time, and inevitably have paint all over the side of my hand.

I just finished this painting and entered it in the Southern Tier Biennial. I intended it to be on a white background with a big shadow, but it just didn't look right. I fooled around with it on Photoshop, and decided I liked the black background, and a completely different composition, so here it is.

Never had a black background before. It is actually multiple layers of black, Pthalo Blue, black, Pthalo Blue, so it is not as flat looking as looks here.

I have fond feelings for it, because it was the first painting accepted into a juried WC exhibition since I quit doing shows in the early 90's. The interested party bought another painting, so I was happy in the end.
